Venice explorers
The Renaissance in Europe was full of great art and new teachings, and exploration took off. Many countries in Europe made explorations to the new world. The first to send someone to the “new world” was Spain, when they first arrived they believed they were in Asia. This land was not Asia, but was a “new world”. This land is now called North America; the USA, Canada, and Mexico are now all a part of this continent. Why did they all want to explore now, well the answer is pretty simple they had the tools to do it. Like a new toy they wanted to play with it and by doing this they found out new and better ways to make them too.
Venice is a town in Italy; there were many great explorers from there. Some of the most important were Alvise Cadamasto, Marco Polo, and John Cabot. They all made some important discoveries and found many new places.

Alvise Cadamasto
came form a merchant family he wanted to make a name for himself so he went into exploration. He went on his first voyage sailing for Italy, he was going to try and find the “Kingdom of Gambia”. He was told that in this kingdom there was a lot of gold. Along his way he made many stops at islands that slowed down his a lot. He finally reached the mouth of the Senegal River this would lead him right to where he wanted to go. As he started his way up the river he sent a letter to a kingdom’s ruler, Zucholin, telling him about Alvise’s arrival and his desire to trade. Zucholin came to him in person bringing with him 15 horsemen and 150 warriors. After this stay he headed south to Gambia, along the way he met to other ships. The captain of one of the ships was Antoniotto Usodmare and the other is not known. They both joined him in his journey to Gambia. When they traveled only 40 miles up the rive they were attacked, the crew wanted to return home because they were scared. On his second voyage he and Usodmare went back to Gambia with five ships three of these belonged to King Henry. They this time didn’t make any stops along the way they were almost half of the way there when a big storm hit that blew them off of their course but because of this they found two new island, but since these islands were uninhabited they didn’t stay there for long they had to get going. They came to the estuary and went upstream. How this voyage ended no one really knows.

Marco Polo
lived from 1254-1324 all throughout his childhood he lives with his aunt and uncle, Maffeo Polo. His father, Nicolo Polo didn’t stay with him but came back to him when he was 19 this is when all three of the Polo’s went on there first voyage altogether. In 1271 they went to China across the Silk Road. When they got there they stayed there for 17 years. Marco worked for Kublia Khan in his 17 years there. To get home he sailed he didn’t go across land. He came back to Italy and along with him he brought jade, jewels, ivory, porcelain, and silk. He told his people about how the Chinese used coal, compasses, and money. There was a book written by Rustichello called The Book of Travelers. They went back to China for many more years and Marco became the governor there for three years.

John Cabot's route to the "New World"

John Cabot was an Italian explorer that explored North America. On May 1497 he and his son Sebastian headed west. They left from Bristol England. He like many other people of his time thought that Asia could be reached by sailing west. He convinced Henry VII that any land he found he would claim in the name of Henry. He sailed out on May 1497 the Matthew. He landed in the new world thinking that it was Asia. We cannot tell if he landed in present day Maine or in Canada. He claimed the land he saw in the name of king Henry VII. He is known as the first European Explorer to reach North America. He didn’t find what he wanted though, but when he came back home he was given a hero’s welcome. He had supposedly reached the “Land of Spices”. He was next sent to Japan to find spices he found none but we don’t really know his ending some say he died at sea some say he made it home.
